Versions and Variations of 'Mondrian'

From time to time, I will make several versions of a painting for various reasons - one needed in a different room; a different size or aspect ratio; one is being sold or a gift... - but I painted them all so here they are. - Click here to go to the paintings stats page.

Vincent's Van Gogh's famous painting - 'The Scream' or 'The Shriek'. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse
This is the original 20"x24" (102x76cm) painting that I did back in 2005 - oil on canvas (lead white and pure, single component colours: Red - Cadmium Sulpho-Selenide; Yellow - Cadmium Zinc Sulphide; Green - Cromium Oxide; Blue - Lapis (Complex Soldium Alumino-Silicate containing Sulphur); and, Mauve - Manganese Phosphate)..

A smaller variation - 12"x16" (96x76cm) - in the style of Van Gogh's impasto technique - irregular gold/brown toned-down canvas then individual strokes of variations on the colour (so, for example, the yellow contains strokes that run from almost green through to orange and in this painting, the yellow also includes two strokes of 24 carat gold leaf).
I needed a proof of concept for an idea I had about fusing the strict order of the Mondrian with the organic chaos of Kandinsky's improvisations and this was it. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse
12"x16" (96x76cm) - I needed a proof of concept for an idea I had about fusing the strict order of the Mondrian with the organic chaos of Kandinsky's improvisations and this was what I came up with. Incidentally, I started this painting back in 2005 and then left it with the central, Kandinskyesque part, not started back then - only to complete it in 2015 - in effect, a painting that took me 10 years to complete. The white is the original 2005 white, as are the red, green and blue (same as the 2005 original at the top of this page) but the small, light blue (Cerulean Blue - Cobalt Stannate) at the top and the long, pale blue at the bottom are later (2015) additions.
Thought. The strict order of the Mondrian is digested by the insanity of the Kandinsky. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse
Thought - 40"x30" (102x76cm). A proof of concept to a large painting is like a pilot plant to a fully-blown petrochemical plant. Here, the strict order of the Mondrian is digested by the insanity of the Kandinskyesque painting with a style and theme that evolved as I painted it - the identity of its component parts manifesting themselves whilst still in the process of painting.
A smaller version of 'Thought' needed for another room - Mondrianesque painting in the style of Kandinski. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse
A smaller version of Thought - 12"x16" (96x76cm). This was needed for a themed room and even the aspect ratio has been swapped over so that it fits in with the other paintings present. Note that this painting - like the Van Gogh variant - also uses 24 carat gold leaf.
