Close-up of the eye on the right. The reflection from the back of the lens gives the lens depth. The darker block on the right hand side of the eye is natural pigmentation in this cat - her brother had the same mark. Close-up of the nose, showing overall shaping of the nose and mouth - the ginger fleck at the tntrance to the nostril on the left is colouration on the cat which is predominantly black with small areas of tortoiseshell such as the eyebrows and the patch on the neck.
Detail of the area to the right of the nose, showing highlights on the fur as highlights on the hairs. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse Detail of the area above the nose showing the same type of highlighting. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse

Detail of the tortoiseshell patch on the neck, just above the ruff - this is built up from biscuit ginger and dark ginger to make the tabby stripes on that area. Detail of the gold and jewelled front, showing a sapphire and gold-work. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse More of the jewellry showing rubys, emeralds and pearls. The ruby and sapphires alternate as they go down the garment. Copyright (c)2015 Paul Alan Grosse
Detail of the gold and jewelled front, showing a sapphire and some gold-work. To give you an idea of the scale of this, the whole of this close-up image is only 20mm high, the sapphire is 2.2mm high and the gold protrusion in the centre that points slightly upwards to the right is only 0.8mm wide - the darker golden line separating it from its neighbour at its base being only 130 microns wide. At some point, it all becomes rather impressionistic and with this type of painting you need to get a bit closer than normal viewing distance to see it. More of the jewellry showing rubys, emeralds and pearls. The ruby and sapphires alternate as they go down the garment. In this painting, the pearls are all white whereas in the ER ermine portrait, all of the pearls are black - I opted to go for white because the cat has a black face whereas ER was white (lead carbonate white, in fact)
